D23 finished strong on Friday as the day’s festivities closed with a panel focusing on Marvel’s upcoming animated projects. After a reel that showcased some of the studio’s upcoming projects, Cort Lane- the Senior VP of Marvel Animation- quickly went over a few projects set to come out soon.

The secret wars are coming, just not the kind we’re expecting.

Disney XD’s Avengers series will return with a new roster of heroes as they embark on a strange mission. The likes of Captain America and the Hulk have been replaced by Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Miss Marvel, Vision, Ant-Man and the Wasp. These heroes come together to assist Taskmaster, the villain capable of mimicking anyone’s moves, to stop the evil MODOK.

The clip showcased some awesome action, but what stood out was how quippy and fun it was to watch Taskmaster. Clancy Brown, the voice of Mr. Krabs, does a great job at bringing the cocky character to life and I’m hoping the character will be used on the show for quite a while.

Marvel’s Spider-Man

A new Spider-Man animated show is set to debut on Disney XD August 19th. The full voice cast was revealed and will feature Robbie Daymond as Peter Parker, Nadji Jeter as Miles Morales, Melanie Minichino as Anya Corazon, Max Mittleman as Harry Osborn, Fred Tatasciore as Max Modell. Rounding out the cast will be Laura Bailey as Gwen Stacy, Nancy Linari as Aunty May, Scott Menville as Doc Ock, John DiMaggio as Jackal, Alastair Dunacn as Vulture, and Patton Oswalt as Uncle Ben. It was revealed Uncle Ben will only be utilized through flashback scenes that show him interacting with Peter.

He will deal with simple issues like dating inside and outside of the costume. The D23 audience was given a sneak peak at episode 108 that showcases Peter trying to rid himself of the symbiote. Lane even said that the symbiote is setting up a larger story that will lead to an eventual crossover between Marvel’s Spider-Man and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy series on Disney XD.

Joe Quesada, Marvel’s Chief Creative Officer, was brought on the D23 stage to reveal his secret involvement in the new series. Joe owns the coffee shop “Cup of Joe” (the title of his classic newsletter) where Peter and Harry often come after school to unwind and provides a voice to the aptly named Joe. He even called the experience daunting before shifting gears to compliment the series.

“We’ve drilled down to the perfect essence of Spider-Man and Peter Parker as we try to bring him into the modern times.”

The show had a fun, exciting vibe that feels very much so in line with what audiences saw in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Stay tuned for August because I think audiences have a solid Spider-Man show swinging their way.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy

For all intents and purposes, the Guardians of the Galaxy won this panel. Not only did the full cast of the animated show come out on the D23 stage, but they even played a quick game of Smash Libs to keep the D23 audience entertained.

The rest of season two will see the Guardians team up with the Nova Corps, Avengers and Asgardian warriors in order to save their friend Adam Warlock from his evil personality, Magus. Despite the serious premise, the cast promises a show that is still light and accessible.

“The sense of humor is really ratcheted up this season and I think that’s what separates us from the other Marvel shows,” said Trevor Devall, the voice of Rocket.

Season 3 of Guardians is set to tie into the new Mission Breakout ride at Disney’s California Adventure Park. We will see the team during the ride and after as the Collector sets about hunting the Guardians down for what they did to his collection. Not only will the third season tie into the ride but it will include a couple of episodes focusing on solo adventures after the team is forced to split up.

“It felt like I was on the ride in some of these episodes because there is just so much action,” said David Sobolov who voices Drax.

While the team made sure not to reveal too many details, they did say that each episode will include a different animation style to help each character’s personality and actions stand out. The only story detail they did let slip was that Gamora’s adventure will be influenced by the classic Disney Princess tales.

Sorry all you Kim Possible fans though, because there doesn’t seem to be any crossovers planned between the Marvel and Disney animation teams.

Will Friedle, who voices Star Lord and used to voice fan-favorite character Ron Stoppable joked, “I think Ron could hang with the Guardians.”
