Marvel Studios has found its Shang-Chi inย Kim’s Convenience star Simu Liu. Kevin Feige broke the news during the Marvel Studios Hall H panel at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. He also revealed that the film’s official title isย Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and thatย its cast also includesย Awkwafina andย Tony Leung, with the latter playing the Mandarin.
Marvel’s Shang Chiย film is set to introduce its first Asian lead protagonist and Destin Creston has been hired to helm the upcoming film after the company reportedly searched for an Asian or Asian-American filmmaker to introduce the hero in a project that explores Asian and Asian American themes.ย Chinese-American writer Dave Callahamย is set to pen the screenplay for theย Shang Chiย film.

In the comics, Shang-Chi is a skilled martial artist who was raised and trained by his father Fu Manchu, a Chineseย crimelord and immortal sorcerer who repeatedly attempted to conquerย the world, in an isolated compound located in China. When Shang-Chi was finally allowed to venture into the outside world in order to do his fatherโs bidding,ย he learned about his fatherโs evil ways and faked his own death before embarking on a mission to take down Fu Manchuโs criminal empire.
Introduced inย Special Marvel Edition #15ย in December 197, the script will reportedly modernize the source material in order to avoid the character stereotypes of the time.
