The latest of Marvel Studios’ What If…? features a nod towards one of the Fantastic Four’s most iconic villains.
Spoilers ahead for this week’s episode of What If…?
Without a doubt, it’s safe to say that this week’s episode of What If…? produced one of the more interesting premises we’ve seen this season. The eighth episode in the animated series from Marvel Studios asked the question: “What If Ultron had won…?” and it lived up to its tall hypothetical scenario. Instead of Ultron perishing at the hands of the Avengers, the Tony Stark-created artificial intelligence/android eventually got his hands on the Infinity Stone and became one of the most deadly villains seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The Ultron episode, which was filled with interesting hypothetical scenarios, also featured a nod towards Fantastic Four’s Galactus, arguably the biggest bad that Marvel Comics has ever produced. The towering cosmic entity that consumes planets doesn’t appear in the episode, but one of his most iconic still is recreated by the hybrid version of Ultron and Vision.
Throughout this run in the comics, Galactus has frequently appeared in the pose seen above as he consumes a planet, so it is interesting that What If…? subbed in that role for Ultron. While we haven’t seen Galactus in the MCU yet, the character is expected to pop up down the lines when Marvel Studios establishes its Fantastic Four film, which is currently in early development.
Here is the synopsis for Marvel Studios’ What If…?:
“Exploring pivotal moments from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and turning them on their head, leading the audience into uncharted territory.”
Marvel’s What If…? features the voices of Josh Brolin, Natalie Portman, Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, Jeremy Renner, Paul Rudd, Mark Ruffalo, Michael B Jordan, Chadwick Boseman, Jeffrey Wright, Hayley Atwell, and other major stars from the MCU.
