‘The Batman’ Director Matt Reeves Reveals Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne Is Inspired By Kurt Cobain

Nirvana helped inspire The Batman!

The Batman Robert Pattinson Matt Reeves Trailer Shot

The Batman director Matt Reeves revealed how listening to Nirvana helped inspire Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne.

One of the most striking moments in recent comic book film memory was when the first trailer for Matt Reeves’ The Batman began with Nirvana’s “Something In The Way”, one of the band’s most morose and downer songs. The song immediately set the one for Reeves’ take on the character, which would be grounded and brutal, etched into reality. It turns out that the song from the hit 90s album “Nevermind” was at the core of Reeves’ writing process.

In an interview with Empire magazine – who recently unveiled two new images from the film – Matt Reeves revealed how the band’s song and its lead singer, Kurt Cobain, helped inspire Robert Pattinson’s version of Bruce Wayne.

“When I write, I listen to music, and as I was writing the first act, I put on Nirvana’s ‘Something In The Way’. That’s when it came to me that, rather than make Bruce Wayne the playboy version we’ve seen before, there’s another version who had gone through a great tragedy and become a recluse. So I started making this connection to Gus Van Sant’s Last Days, and the idea of this fictionalized version of Kurt Cobain being in this kind of decaying manor.”

Matt Reeves continued by revealing how he sought out Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader after seeing him in the Safdie Brother’s Good Time.

“In that movie you could really feel his vulnerability and desperation, but you could also feel his power. I thought that was a great mix. He’s also got that Kurt Cobain thing, where he looks like a rock star, but you also feel like he could be a recluse.”

The new interpretation of Bruce Wayne is a far cry from the charismatic stud we’ve previously seen on the big screen. The departure from extrovert to introvert certainly sets Matt Reeves’ take on the character apart and we look forward to seeing just how reclusive Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne is.

Here is the official synopsis for The Batman:

Two years of stalking the streets as the Batman (Robert Pattinson), striking fear into the hearts of criminals, has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City. With only a few trusted allies — Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis), Lt. James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) — amongst the city’s corrupt network of officials and high-profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens.

When a killer targets Gotham’s elite with a series of sadistic machinations, a trail of cryptic clues sends the World’s Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he encounters such characters as Selina Kyle/aka Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), Oswald Cobblepot/aka the Penguin (Colin Farrell), Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), and Edward Nashton/aka the Riddler (Paul Dano). As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator’s plans becomes clear, Batman must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit, and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City.

Directed by Matt Reeves, the film stars Robert Pattinson as the titular hero, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as the Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard as Gil Colson, Jayme Lawson as Bella Reál, with Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Colin Farrell as the Penguin.
