The Batman director Matt Reeves says the film was always meant to be PG-13.
In the lead-up to The Batman‘s release, fans speculated that Matt Reeves’ dark and brooding DC reboot would receive an R-rating. Of course, that wasn’t the case, as the film has officially been rated as PG-13 by the MPAA. Some fans were disappointed by the news, especially after the film’s promotional materials presented a Batman that’s unhinged and wholly terrifying. Many might be under the assumption that the film was being developed as an R-rated project and was only neutered during editing but that’s far from the case.
Speaking with Den of Geek, The Batman director Matt Reeves confirmed that the DC reboot was always going to be rated PG-13. Reeves also touched upon how the film would push the limits of the family-friendly rating.
“In my mind, the movie was always going to be a gritty, edgy, noir, thrilling spectacle that was PG-13. That was always what it was, but I always knew that we’d be pushing the limits of what that could be, and so we didn’t really have to cut anything. The promotional materials that you’re seeing, they’re fully reflective of the tone of the movie.”
Matt Reeves also confirmed that there’s no mythical director’s cut of the film that features an R-rating.
“There isn’t some special cut of this movie where it’s like, ‘Oh yeah, here’s the R rating that you’ve been desperately wanting,’ I didn’t have to suddenly start drastically cutting the movie or anything like that.”
Here is the synopsis for The Batman:
Two years of stalking the streets as the Batman (Robert Pattinson), striking fear into the hearts of criminals, has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City. With only a few trusted allies — Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis), Lt. James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) — amongst the city’s corrupt network of officials and high-profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens.
When a killer targets Gotham’s elite with a series of sadistic machinations, a trail of cryptic clues sends the World’s Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he encounters such characters as Selina Kyle/aka Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), Oswald Cobblepot/aka the Penguin (Colin Farrell), Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), and Edward Nashton/aka the Riddler (Paul Dano). As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator’s plans becomes clear, Batman must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit, and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City.
