Legends of Tomorrow will be retiring the role of Constantine and Matt Ryan will play a new character in the next season of the Arrowverse series.
Matt Ryan has had an interesting journey as Constantine, to say the least. He originally starred as the character in the series of the same name for NBC, which received stellar reviews but didn’t manage to pack in a lot of viewers. NBC canceled the series after its first season, leaving many fans and critics to petition for the show to be picked up by Netflix. While that didn’t happen, Ryan’s Constantine was formally introduced into the Arrowverse thanks to an episode of Arrow which saw Oliver Queen requiring his services to deal with the Lazarus Pit.
Shortly afterward, Matt Ryan resumed his role as Constantine in the third season of DC’s ensemble series Legends of Tomorrow in a recurring role. His appearance proving to be a success, Ryan was brought on board to become a series regular starting season 4. Having played Constantine on three different shows, Ryan’s tenure as the detective is coming to an end.
During the show’s Comic-Con @ Home panel, co-showrunner Phil Klemmer revealed that Matt Ryan’s Constantine will be phased out of Legends of Tomorrow and that the actor will be portraying a new character. In the seventh season, Ryan will be playing Dr. Gwyn Davies, an eccentric scientist from the 20th century. Ryan briefly discussed Constantine being phased out at the panel.
“As everyone who loves him knows, in the end, John Constantine will walk his path alone. The time has come for John to part ways with the Legends, and for me to part ways with John. I’m really excited to be creating this new role on the show and having some fun with it — discovering how this new character fits in and causes some trouble for the Legends.”
