‘Star Wars’: Maz Kanata Has Smaller Role In ‘The Last Jedi’

Star Wars: The Force Awakens introduced a slew of brand new characters that expand the lore of the galaxy. One of the characters that added more to the mythology was Maz Kanata. Academy Award-winner Lupita Nyong’o had the privilege of bringing this character to life as she introduces Rey (Daisy Ridley) to the power of the Force.

When Rey runs away from the Skywalker lightsaber that Maz urges her to take, Maz hands the weapon to Finn (John Boyega) to use to find Rey. Maz is never seen again in the rest of the film, but is set to return in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

However, Maz will have a smaller role in the upcoming film. During this week’s Entertainment Weekly spread revealing new details regarding The Last Jedi, director Rian Johnson hinted at Maz’s place in the story:

“She has a smaller part in this than she has in The Force Awakens, but it’s a really fun part, and Lupita is so awesome, I’m just happy I got to work with her… This was my first time working with mo-cap characters and working with actors in that way, I feel like I got such an incredible education watching Lupita work.”

Maz will reportedly appear in a very important scene in the film. In The Force Awakens, she is shown to have vast knowledge regarding familial history, certain characters’ true intentions and of course, the Force. But which characters will she be appearing onscreen with? Will we see her alongside Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and Rey? Or maybe Finn and Rose Tico (Kelly Marie Tran) run into her during their mission on Canto Bight? We will certainly find out this holiday season.

Written and directed by Rian Johnson, the film stars Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Wyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Gwendoline Christie, Anthony Daniels, Andy Serkis, Benicio del Toro, Laura Dern and Kelly Marie Tran.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi arrives in our galaxy on December 15, 2017.
