The Transformers franchise’s fan-favorite Autobot Bumblebee is finally getting his own voice in the upcoming spin-off centered on the character.

IGN reports Dylan O’Brien, best known for his roles in The Maze Runner franchise is providing the voice for the titular character in Bumblebee. Traditionally, the character has used soundbites from the radio to communicate with the characters in previous films but producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura explained to IGN why it was important to hear the character’s own voice in the upcoming prequel:

“Since we were approaching this as an origin story, we felt that it was appropriate that you got to hear his voice. That’s the simple logic that we employed. The longer term implication of that is different. But the short-term implication of that is, since we really are resetting the mythology, essentially, of who Bumblebee is. And so, that seemed to us to be the appropriate, to get the chance to hear what he sounds like.”

The producer went on to praise O’Brien while sharing why they felt the actor was the perfect fit for the role:

“Dylan has that great quality in his voice of youthful exuberance, and also sort of trustworthiness. I think those are the two qualities that we wanted Bumblebee to have.”

Directed by Travis Knight from a script written by Christina Hodson, the film stars Hailee Steinfeld, Pamela Adlon, John Cena, Stephen Schneider, Jorge Lendeborg Jr., Jason Ian Drucker, Kenneth Choi, Ricardo Hoyos, Abby Quinn, Rachel Crow, and Grace Dzienny.

On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug.

Bumblebee will be released in theaters on December 21, 2018.
