When it comes to modern composers, one of the most prolific and critically lauded is Michael Giacchino. Now it looks as though he will display his skills within the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the Scott Derrickson’s Doctor Strange. Right on the evening of the U.S. release of Captain America: Civil War, Giacchino revealed his involvement through a tweet.

This isn’t Giacchino’s first foray into the superhero genre, for he had previously composed the score for Brad Bird’s The Incredibles. Along with The Incredibles, Giacchino has been a frequent collaborator with Pixar Animation Studios, composing the scores for Ratatouille, Up (for which he won his first Academy Award), Cars 2, and Inside Out. Other titles include collaborations with J.J. Abrams, having been involved with each of Abrams’ films pre-The Force Awakens, having scored Mission: Impossible III, Star Trek (2009), Super 8, and Star Trek Into Darkness. This year, Giacchino was involved with Disney’s megahit, Zootopia and the upcoming Star Trek Beyond.
Hopefully, this marks a sign that Marvel is going for the highest-caliber talent they can get when it comes to composers for their movies. And in all honesty, in terms of who we have today, Michael Giacchino is a pretty high bar. What sensibilities do you think he will add within the realms of Doctor Strange? Remember, this is the guy who composed “Married Life” for the masterful opening of Up. We are in good hands.
After his career is destroyed, a brilliant but arrogant and conceited surgeon gets a new lease on life when a sorcerer takes him under her wing and trains him to defend the world against evil.
Directed by Scott Derrickson and starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Michael Stuhlbarg, Mads Mikkelsen, and Tilda Swinton, Doctor Strange opens in theaters November 4.
