Moon Knight head writer and executive producer Jeremy Slater explained the lack of connections to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the series.
Moon Knight shocked many viewers, not because of a major connection to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but because of its standalone nature. In Phase Four, it’s almost expected that a Marvel Studios project will feature some connection to the greater universe, but Moon Knight instead told a true solo tale.
Most of the Marvel Studios projects set post-Avengers: Endgame have addressed “The Blip” in their own creative way and others are starting to talk about the Multiverse. In an interview with The Direct, creator Jeremy Slater discussed why Moon Knight was so disconnected from the rest of the MCU:
“There were certain territories and topics where we were told early on, ‘Let’s steer clear,’ because Marvel’s always very conscious about repeating themselves. They want to always be sort of stretching and finding new corners of the universe to explore. So it was like, let’s stay away from The Blip, because The Blip is obviously being discussed in depth in WandaVision, in Falcon and the Winter Soldier, in Hawkeye. Let’s sort of avoid that aspect. Let’s stay away from [the] Multiverse because of Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. There’s just those different areas where they were like… it feels like the MCU is going really heavy on certain ideas and concepts over here, so we need to keep our little corner very separate than that, so it doesn’t start to feel like everything is a Multiverse story.”
What If…?
Moon Knight might’ve restrained itself from having major MCU connections, but the series almost featured appearances from Kumail Nanjiani’s Kingo and Kit Harington’s Black Knight from Eternals. Despite those apperances not coming to frution, it does provide a little insight on which area of the MCU Oscar Isaac’s Moon Knight could turn up in next.
Here is the synopsis for Moon Knight:
The series follows Steven Grant, a mild-mannered gift-shop employee, who becomes plagued with blackouts and memories of another life. Steven discovers he has dissociative identity disorder and shares a body with mercenary Marc Spector. As Steven/Marc’s enemies converge upon them, they must navigate their complex identities while thrust into a deadly mystery among the powerful gods of Egypt.
Created by Jeremy Slater, the Disney Plus series stars Oscar Isaac, May Calamawy, Karim El Hakim, F. Murray Abraham, Ethan Hawke, Ann Akinjirin, David Ganly, Khalid Abdalla, Gaspard Ulliel, Antonia Salib, Fernanda Andrade, Rey Lucas, Sofia Danu, and Saba Mubarak.
