Deadpool star Morena Baccarin recently spoke about the possibility of reprising the role of Vanessa Carlysle in the franchise as it leaps into the MCU with Deadpool 3.
Ryan Reynolds is gearing up to return as Marvel’s Merc With a Mouth in a third live-action outing. With the film rights to the character now back home at Marvel Studios, Deadpool 3 will mark the first film in the franchise to take place in the MCU and fans may be wondering which other franchise staples are returning.
Morena Baccarin’s Vanessa, Wade Wilson’s love interest, appeared in each of the first two Deadpool films. While she very nearly met her demise in the second movie, a post-credits scene may have opened the door to a return.
Deadpool & Vanessa Reunite In The MCU
Speaking recently at DragonCon Atlanta, Morena Baccarin revealed she does not yet know if Vanessa will be back in Deadpool 3, but she would hope to return.
In Deadpool 2, Vanessa was killed early on when a band of criminals broke into her and Wade’s apartment, seeking revenge on Deadpool. However, the film’s post-credits scene saw Deadpool making use of Cable’s repaired time-travel device to save Vanessa from the attack.
Morena Baccarin spoke about the possibility of a Deadpool 3 return, saying:
“You know, from your lips to God’s ears, I have no idea [if Vanessa’s in Deadpool 3]. They’re writing the script right now. I’m usually the last to find out anything. I’m not even… I wish I had information I could give you but I really don’t. But it’d be great.”
Going on to discuss the second film’s ending, in which Deadpool may have – very characteristically – undone his entire arc throughout the movie by preventing Vanessa’s death from ever happening, Baccarin revealed this wasn’t always the plan.
The actress said the change came about as the result of test screenings and fans’ reactions could indicate there’s a good chance Vanessa will be brought back for Deadpool 3:
“I think when we shot the second film, I would just die. And then after they screened it a few times they actually changed it to include this timeline thing so I think that’s a good sign that the fans want to see her again. Whether or not it happens, it’s not up to me.”
Deadpool 3 is yet to land a release date and with work on the script currently ongoing, details of the upcoming Marvel movie are still sparse. However, following Deadpool 2‘s post-credits sequence, it looks like the door is open for Morena Baccarin’s Vanessa to return.
Here is the synopsis for Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool 2:
