Warner Bros. has slated its new Mortal Kombat movie to hit theaters on March 5, 2021.
Highly demanded commercial director Simon McQuoid is set to make his directorial debut with the project. McQuiod is best known for his commercials for PlayStation, Halo, Range Rover, and Beats by Dre. James Wan will serve as producer. Pre-production on the project begins this month with principal photography expected to kick off later this year in South Australia.
The film will open against Sony’s Master of the Universe film starring Noah Centineo when it arrives in theaters.
Mortal Kombat is one of the most successful video game franchises of all time and the feature film adaptation that released in 1995 is still held by fans in regard as one of the best video game adaptations ever made. After the poorly received sequel Mortal Kombat: Annihilation released, the franchise stalled out and the fighting game has never been as popular as it was in the mid-’90s.
But the franchise began gaining new momentum back in 2010 when a web-short titled Mortal Kombat: Rebirth from screenwriter Oren Uziel hit the web, gaining enough popularity to spawn the web series Mortal Kombat: Legacy. Although Uziel didn’t remain involved with Legacy, he was asked by New Line to develop the script for the Mortal Kombat Reboot.
Plot details have not been revealed, however, Uziel previously teased that his adaptation of the violent video game was an R-rated version of The Avengers. Greg Russo has since penned a more recent draft of the script.
Casting details also remain under wraps but Joel Edgerton was previously reported to be the top choice to play Kano in the new Mortal Kombat film.
Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for the latest news on the Mortal Kombat reboot we learn it.
