Newly released stills from the upcoming Ms. Marvel show Iman Vellani’s Kamala Khan at a cosplay contest, where another cosplayer can be seen wearing Carol Danvers’ classic Ms. Marvel costume.
In the comics, before adopting the iconic Captain Marvel costume that she is now known for, Carol Danvers wore a black outfit with a yellow “lightning bolt” emblem, domino mask and thigh-high black boots. Like a lot of female superhero costumes from comic book history, it was much more revealing than the outfits worn by Carol’s male contemporaries and was ultimately replaced by her Captain Marvel look. It seemed unlikely this costume would ever make it into live-action, but it will apparently have a small cameo in Ms. Marvel.
The Ms. Marvel series is centered on the newest hero to carry this moniker – Kamala Khan, portrayed in the MCU by Iman Vellani. Kamala is a teenager and a huge Carol Danvers fan. In the Disney Plus series, it looks like this aspect of her character is being explored through her Captain Marvel cosplay. One scene appears to show her in a cosplay contest and, in new images released by Empire magazine, one of her fellow contestants can be seen wearing Carol’s old Ms. Marvel outfit.
As Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers has never worn this classic Ms. Marvel costume in the MCU, it is likely this outfit will be introduced as a cosplayer’s reinterpretation of Carol’s Captain Marvel costume. It is hard to tell from the image, but it looks like Carol’s old “lightning bolt” emblem may have been replaced with the Captain Marvel star-shaped logo that has always adorned her MCU suit.
Here is the synopsis for Ms. Marvel:
Marvel Studios’ “Ms. Marvel” is a new, original series that introduces Kamala Khan, a Muslim American teenager growing up in Jersey City. An avid gamer and a voracious fan-fiction scribe, Kamala is a Super Hero mega fan with an oversized imagination—particularly when it comes to Captain Marvel. Life gets better with super powers, right?
