‘Namor’ Has Returned To Marvel Studios According To Joe Quesada

Namor

On the latest installment of Kevin Smith’s Fat Man on Batman podcast, Marvel’s Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada revealed that the film rights for Namor are finally back at Marvel Studios.

When the hosts of the show, Kevin Smith and Marc Bernardin, asked Quesada directly regarding the current home of the Sub Mariner, he replied

“We do, he’s in the comics.”

But quickly Smith asked further:

“no, what studio. How come you guys aren’t diving into the water. Do the same people who have Iron Man have Sub Mariner?”

Quesada responded:

“Yes, as far as I know yes we do. Yeah, it’s not at Fox, it’s not at Sony.”

In the past Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige had stated that the current status of the characters rights were indeed with Marvel, but that they were “slightly more complicated than that” to which he said that there were contracts still in place that prohibited them from using the character, but in seems that to the best of his knowledge, Joe Quesada seems to think Marvel now has them 100% without issue.

Does that mean fans will get a Namor film soon? Possibly, but its also likely that the character would simply join into the fray like Spider-Man did in Captain America: Civil War. Hopefully thanks to the gravity of Quesada’s claims, Marvel will officially comment soon enough.

I’m not sure this means anything. He mention’s “it’s not at Fox, it’s not at Sony.” but as far as I’ve read it was Universal that had the Namor rights.

    • Steve Steve

It was Universal. They were going to make it after Incredible Hulk, but the green fellow didn’t make enough money for them. I’ve read that Universal has first-refusal on distribution for a solo Hulk film. If that is the case, I imagine their deal for Namor was similar.

        Exactly.

  • Peter James

I thought the fact that he’s a Mutant was one of the major sticking points seeing as Fox has all the exclusive rights to any characters identified as mutants (which is why Scarlett Witch and Quicksilver were not referrred to as mutants but rather as “Enhanceds”. Marvel had a loophole and grey area in using them since they’ve been members of the Avengers in the comics before)?

In fact he’s often referred to as ‘The first Mutant’ (which would be news to Apocalypse).

So the only way he would appear in a Marvel movie would be if they don’t refer to him as a mutant*.

(*to be fair, Spider-Man is also strictly speaking, a mutant – since his changes also occurred on the genetic level. He’s just never been referred to as such, that I know of).

    • Maximillian Pegasus

He appeared before the X-Men, that’s why he wasn’t sold together with it, also Peter Parker isn’t a Mutant, he had his genes mutated but he isn’t a proper “Mutant”, all Marvel would be Mutants then.

I think he doesn’t know that, Joe Quesada has nothing to do with Marvel Studios.
