It seems the streaming titan will be adding live-action video game adaptations to its docket as Netflix has acquired the rights to distribute the live-action adaptation of Tom Clancy’s The Division.
The official announcement came in earlier today from during Ubisoft’s official E3 presentation. During the presentation, it was announced that Netflix would be producing the upcoming adaptation of the Tom Clancy property. An actual hard release date, however, was not provided.
The upcoming Netflix adaptation of Tom Clancy’s The Division is set to star Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain. It is also set to be directed by David Leitch who previously directed Deadpool 2, Atomic Blond, the upcoming film Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw and had an uncredited director role in the first John Wick film. The script will be penned by Rafe Judkins who also wrote the upcoming Uncharted film and is listed as the creator of the upcoming fantasy series, The Wheel of Time.
The game, an open-world, online-only experience that was released on both the Xbox One and PS4, follows a group of elite soldiers from the Strategic Homeland Division, a.k.a. The Division, as they traverse an apocalyptic New York City. The team is tasked with reestablishing their organizations operations in the city, discovering how a smallpox pandemic broke out in the city and trying to keep the peace among the remaining scared, desperate citizens. Its sequel, Tom Clancy’s The Division 2, took place in Washington D.C. The upcoming film is set in New York City.
