Ayer has described the R-rated Supernatural cop thriller as End of Watch meets Alien Nation (1988). The film follows Smith as a Los Angeles police officer in a world where monsters walk the Earth alongside humans. Smith is forced to work with an Orc (Edgerton) in order to find a powerful wand that dangerous forces are willing to kill for. Sources close to the project said it was not set in present day but it is now confirmed to be an alternate present day.
Bright is another step in Netflix’s continuing effort to shake up the industry. The online streaming service spent $3 million to acquire the script and another $90 million to produce the project with Smith and Edgerton attached. For Bright, Ayer reteamed with his go-to cinematographer Roman Vasyanov who he worked with previously Suidice Squad, Fury, and End of Watch. The script comes from the brilliantly talented and controversial screenwriter Max Landis who penned such films as Chronicle, Victor Frankenstein, and American Ultra.
The film stars Will Smith, Joel Edgerton, Noomi Rapace, Edgard Ramirez, Ike Barinholtz, Brad William Henke, Lucy Fry, Chris Browning, and Kenneth Choi. Here’s the official synopsis:
Set in an alternate present-day where humans, orcs, elves, and fairies have been co-existing since the beginning of time. Bright is genre-bending action movie that follows two cops from very different backgrounds. Ward (Will Smith) and Jakoby (Joel Edgerton), embark on a routine patrol night and encounter a darkness that will ultimately alter the future and their world as they know it.
Bright is set to hit Netflix in December 2017.
