The New Mutants star Alice Braga said there were not any major rewrites or reshoots during the production of the film.
Initially scheduled to be released in theaters in April of 2018, The New Mutants was delayed twice before Disney acquired 20th Century Fox and set the film’s theatrical debut for April 2020. Reportedly, the initial delay was to grant the filmmakers time for reshoots that are said to have ultimately never occurred.
During an interview with ScreenRant, The New Mutants star Alice Braga discussed her experience working on the film and it appears it was not nearly as tumultuous as the delays would have many believe. As Alice Braga explained, director Josh Boone and co-writer Knate Lee were so-well prepared once the cameras started rolling that there was little need for on-set reshoots or re-writes:
“Josh prepared so much, him and Knate [Lee], beforehand, you know, about the script and all that, so there’s not much rewrites happening. Like, there’s more creating the environment on set and the energy on set. The location is so amazing, they shot Shutter Island here, the Scorcese film, and you can feel it….”

20th Century Fox in association with Marvel Entertainment presents “The New Mutants,” an original horror thriller set in an isolated hospital where a group of young mutants is being held for psychiatric monitoring. When strange occurrences begin to take place, both their new mutant abilities and their friendships will be tested as they battle to try and make it out alive.
