President of Lucasfilm Kathleen Kennedy has confirmed that the next spinoff in the Star Wars franchise will be decided on in June and it will likely release in 2020.
Kennedy confirmed last month that by the end of the year the company will have begun to map out the future of the Star Wars franchise beyond the sequel trilogy. The statement itself was somewhat confusing as the legendary producer had previously said that she was hopeful an announcement regarding the next spinoff after the Untitled Han Solo Star Wars Story would be coming this summer.
As part of the extensive coverage in the latest issue of Vanity Fair, Kennedy participated in an interview in which she offered some clarification when asked whether or not another spinoff was in development:
“Yes. We haven’t identified it yet, but yes. We have a couple of things right now that we’re circling, and we’ll make a decision between the two pretty shortly. It’s probably for 2020, and we will make a decision by June.”
If the company is able to make a decision between one of the two potential projects by next month, then it is certainly possible we could hear an announcement as early as D23 in July.
Next up for Lucasfilm is the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi which hits theaters later this year on December 15, 2017. Following Episode VIII is The Untitled Han Solo Star Wars Story. The film is being directed by The Lego Movie directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller and is slated for release on May 25, 2018. The franchise will then close out the sequel trilogy with the ninth chapter of the Skywalker saga when Star Wars: Episode IX hits theaters May 24, 2019.
