Shortly after Michael Phelps dominated in the 200m individual medley at the 2016 Rio Olympics on Thursday night, Disney and Lucasfilm answered right back by dropping the second trailer for director Gareth Edwards’ Rogue One – A Star Wars Story. Within hours the trailer rapidly circulated, with RelishMix reporting a 25:1 viral ratio. For reference, the average trailer gets a 10:1. Not to shabby, huh?
As of yesterday Deadline reports, views combined from YouTube and Facebook added up to 34.2M and climbing with the trailer outpacing even this year’s top Super Bowl spots including Jason Bourne, The Jungle Book and Captain America – Civil War. Most impressively, with a bump from a TV spot, the actively anticipated spin-off has been averaging roughly one million views an hour on social media, equaling that of last year’s Star Wars – The Force Awakens when it debuted on October 19 during Monday Night Football. It seems as though folks can’t get enough of this galaxy far far away. And yes I’m speaking for myself.
Set just before the events of George Lucas’ original behemoth, Rogue One – A Star Wars Story chronicles the tale of a group of rebels tasked with a mission of galactic proportions: stealing the plans to the Empire’s ultimate weapon of mass destruction, the Death Star.
Starring Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Forest Whitaker, Donnie Yen, Ben Mendelsohn, and Alan Tudyk, Rogue One opens in theaters Dec. 16, the same slot as The Force Awakens when it set all the records mere months ago. Check out the trailer below.
