Power Rangers

After a long wait, the trailer for the Saban's upcoming Power Rangers movie finally released earlier today! One of many panels today at New York Comic Con belongs to Lionsgate, who previewed John Wick: Chapter 2 as well as Powers Rangers, giving us a better understanding of the movie and what we can expect. The preview was followed by a Q&A session with the cast and filmmakers, resulting in some pretty interesting information.

Power Rangers

Grounded Tone

It's easy to see from the trailer that this take on the Power Rangers is a little different, director Dean Israelite explained his approach:

"I grew up with the Power Rangers and I wanted to make a movie about growing up. I wanted to make this a grounded character driven origin story. One that is set on an amazing adventure. I wanted the characters to be real and relatable as they go on this adventure. I also wanted to make sure we payed respect to the franchise we love, but update it for a new audience."

It sounds like we're getting a more grown up and modern take on the characters, while keeping the same appeal that the franchise has always had.

Zords

Zords

Zords will definitely be a big part of the Powers Rangers movie! It sounds obvious, though there were no zords to be seen in the teaser trailer, so this is the first confirmation of their inclusion. The Mod asked star Dacre Montgomery to tell us everything he could say about them:

"The zords that make an appearance in the film are amazing. We got to use flight simulators that were locked in a little pod. They're HUGE things. It takes on the nature that the big Marvel/DC films are doing with these big epic brawls."

So while zords will be in the movie, it sounds like there's a chance not all of them will show up. The director commented on them too:

"What was important to me was that it feels like these guys were IN the zords and driving them. We build the pods and everything. It was like being in a roller coaster for 12 hours at a time. These guys are reacting as live as possible."

Putties

Putties

Dean Israelite, the Director of the movie, confirmed that we'd see putties. The Putty Patrol is Rita Repulsa's army, they're not strong or smart, but the sheer number of them cause a problem for the Power Rangers all too often.

Putties are created in a monster making machine, and are mass-produced using a steam-pressured mold.

Goldar

Goldar

Goldar is a powerful warrior that operates under the control of Rita Repulsa and Lord Zedd. We already know that Elizabeth Banks is playing Repulsa, so it's natural that she'll need a second in command to control her Putty Patrol. This was revealed via a personal message from Banks herself, who apologises for not being in attendace.

"Thanks so much for being here! Sorry I couldn't be there, and instead of sending Goldar or putties, here is a first look at the Teaser trailer!"

Goldan is a humanoid ape with demonic-looking red eyes and a distinctive gravelly voice - though there's no word on who will tackle this role just yet.

Rita Repulsa
So, what do you think of what you've seen and heard so far? We'll see Rita with her legion of putties, Goldar, Alpha 5, and Zordon later down the line, if Israelite is to be believed:

"This is just a teaser! You're not seeing putties, zords, etc. It's all coming! Alpha 5, Zordon! The space ship! GOLDAR!"

Power Rangers will come together in theatres on March 24, 2017.
