Todd Phillips’ upcoming Joker movie starring Joaquin Phoenix is set to be anย origin story. The gritty and grounded crime film set in 1980s Gotham City follows Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck who is a failed 1980s comedianย that becomes The Joker afterย he bombs with audiences. Joker has been officially describedย by Warner Bros. as an โexploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study but also a broader cautionary tale.โ It will also serve as DCโs firstย outingย beyondย its the current cinematic universe since it was launched by Zack Snyder in 2013 with Man of Steelย in orderย to create new and unique storylines as the studio expands DC canon.
Jokerย is one of the many projects in the works at Warner Bros. and DC Films, including The Batman, The Flash standalone film, Black Adam, Supergirl, New Gods, Batgirl, and Birds of Prey.
Directed by Todd Phillips from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham.
