Olivia Munn On Why ‘Psylocke’ Joins Up With The Villains In ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’

X-Men: Apocalypse is out in theaters this weekend and re-introduces the character of ‘Psylocke’ into the X-Men cinematic universe after her beyond forgettable cinematic debut in X-Men: Last Stand. The new version of the character, played by Olivia Munn, becomes one of the Four Horsemen in the film but there’s really not much explanation regarding why she ends up joining ‘Apocalypse’ on his quest which might leave you scratching your head a small bit. However, while speaking with CinemaBlend, Munn commented on the character’s decision to join the film’s villains.

I know it’s not really shown in the movie that much. It’s something that I talked to Simon Kinberg and Bryan [Singer] about, saying that we’re not really showing the audience the genesis of who Psylocke is and why she would go with him. But the backstory of Psylocke that I brought into it just in my head that you can’t see on screen was that she lost her entire family. She has these really great abilities, these powers, and she’s been manipulated by many different leaders because she’s been looking for her righteous path and looking for a family again.

While the character doesn’t receive much development in this film, it’s completely possible that we’ll see her return and we could learn more about her in the future. Munn then compared ‘Psylocke’ to ‘Wolverine’ and commented on what she saw as similaritys between the two characters.

Much like Wolverine in the comics, he’s got these really amazing abilities and he was manipulated by a lot of people to do their bidding. So that’s what she sees in Apocalypse – yet another maybe righteous leader. She’s looking for someone who will show her the way, and looking for a family.
