After many fits and starts, Pacific Rim: Maelstrom is lensing in Australia under the direction of Steven S. DeKnight (showrunner of Daredevil season 1) and the first set photos of star John Boyega filming have surfaced via The Daily Telegraph.
The sequel to the 2013 robots vs. monsters film features Boyega as the son of Stacker Pentecost (played by Idris Elba), the legendary Jaeger pilot who sacrificed his life to defeat the Kaijus in Guillermo del Toro’s original Pacific Rim. Despite del Toro, who remains an executive producer, initially saying some familiar faces would be back, none have been announced and Boyega is joined by a brand-new cast of young actors, giving the film a soft reboot feel
The photos show Boyega’s young Pentecost in civilian clothes running amidst what looks like destruction, perhaps putting him at the center of a resurgent, vengeful Kaiju or in the Drift, experiencing a memory of his or someone else’s. Judge for yourself below.
