‘Pacific Rim’: Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day & More Returning For Sequel

Pacific Rim Guillermo del Toro

Back in July of 2016, Guillermo Del Toro revealed that Pacific Rim 2 (now titled Pacific Rim: Uprising) would bring back a number of characters from the first movie, though he wouldn’t reveal which ones. After some time it was confirmed that Charlie Hunnam would not be returning for the sequel, and Rinko Kikuchi’s involvement remained up in the air, but now we may finally know which characters Del Toro was talking about.

A new Instagram post by cinematographer Dan Mindel seemingly confirms that Kikuchi will be back along with Charlie Day and Burn Gorman. As you can see below, a piece of paper taped on the side of a camera that likely belongs to Mindel includes their names alongside some of the franchise newcomers, but there’s also another interesting name on that list: Karl Urban, meaning that he may be part of the cast as well. [UPDATE: Urban was asked about the report on Twitter and has denied that he’s part of the project]

John Boyega leads a cast that also includes Scott Eastwood and Cailee Spaeny (as seen above), as well as Jing Tian, Levi Meaden, Adria Arjona, Rahart Adams, Karan Brar, Zhang Jin, Shyrley Rodriguez, Wesley Wong, Lily Ji, Chen Zitong and Lan Yingying. The project is currently filming in Australia.

The sequel is being directed by Steven S. DeKnight, who’s best known for his work on Marvel’s Daredevil and Starz’s Spartacus. Plot details are being kept under lock and key, but we know that Boyega will be playing the son of Marshal Stacker Pentecost (played by Idris Elba), who sacrificed himself in the first installment.

Pacific Rim: Uprising opens in theaters on February 23, 2018.
