Looks like Patrick Stewart is pretty conflicted over leaving his Professor X character behind. Just a few weeks ago, Stewart commented that although Hugh Jackman was retired from his role, he was not quite ready to do so.
“Hugh has raised the flag that says goodbye. I haven’t done that yet.”
Shortly after this, Stewart had an epiphany of sorts at another premiere of Logan, and announced his immediate retirement from the franchise, saying:
“A week ago, Friday night in Berlin, the three of us sat, watching the movie. And I was so moved by it, much more moved than I had been the first time of seeing it. Maybe it was the company of these two guys, but the movie ended and — this is an admission — but at one point [Hugh] reached out, and he took my hand in those last few minutes, and I saw him go [mimes wiping a tear from his eye] like this, and then I realized I had just done the same thing. Then, the movie ended… and we were going to be taken up on stage, but not until the credits were over. So, we had some time to sit there and, as I sat there I realized there will never be a better, a more perfect, a more sensitive, emotional, and beautiful way of saying au revoir to Charles Xavier than this movie. So, I told [Hugh] that same evening, ‘I’m done too. It’s all over.’”
Nevertheless, Patrick Stewart might have at least one condition on which he would return to play his famous role again. In a live interview with MTV, the conversation steered towards talking about Deadpool for a little bit. Before ending the livestream, Stewart didn’t say that he was firmly finished with the character after all:
“I would have said yes, but the discussion just now about Deadpool makes me think, well, maybe there is a proper justification for the revival of Charles Xavier.”
Deadpool is the only movie in the X-men franchise that is set in the present, so it is very possible that Xavier could make an appearance at the X-mansion alongside Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead. Here’s hoping that Stewart will be able to have an interaction with Ryan Reynolds in a future Deadpool film. It would certainly be funny to see Stewart in a more comedic role.
It’s certainly not clear if we will ever actually see Patrick Stewart as Professor X again, but Stewarts love and respect for his character and the X-Men universe cannot be questioned. Patrick Stewart can be seen in his last (for now) appearance as Charles Xavier in Logan which is now in theaters. We at Heroic Hollywood loved it.
