This summer, Gal Gadot will reprise her role as Wonder Woman in the titular heroine’s first live-action solo film. However, with the character being one of the three main DC Comics heroes and arguably one of the most recognizable fictional characters in history, many fans have wondered why it took so long for such an iconic character to receive her own feature film. Of course, several fans have their own idea of why the classic DC hero never received her own film before and in an interview with CinemaBlend, director Patty Jenkins echoed those sentiments.
Jenkins discussed how the superhero genre’s association with young men almost certainly held back the development of a Wonder Woman film.
“The only thing I can think of is that the genre became synonymous with young men, and so I think there was a concern that they wouldn’t be as interested in a female lead and it’s taken years for that to sort itself out. That’s all it comes down to.”
In an interview with Sci-Fi Now, Jenkins discussed how previous films with female leads helped pave the way for Wonder Woman to be made.
“Things like The Hunger Games have already made a huge impact and I think they helped open the door for us. It’s finally saying: ‘Look, there are people making these things with female leads that doesn’t become a chick’s film! It becomes a film for both genders!’ and so other people have opened the door, but I certainly hope that in the superhero genre this will change things.”
Truth be told, Jenkins’ comments hit the nail on the head. What do you think? Share your thoughts below!
Directed by Patty Jenkins, Wonder Woman stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Connie Nielsen, Robin Wright, David Thewlis, Danny Huston, Elena Anaya, Ewen Bremner and Saïd Taghmaoui.
Wonder Woman will be released in theaters on June 2, 2017.
