Peter Sarsgaard Says ‘The Batman’ Will Be ‘Very Emotional’ & ‘Powerful’

Peter Sarsgaard pointed to an alternative rock band to give fans a hint at what to expect from The Batman.

Matt Reeves’ The Batman is set to offer a new take on the Caped Crusader and features an all-star cast that includes Peter Sarsgaard in an undisclosed role. During an appearance at the Television Critics Association’s show for CBS All Access’ Interrogation, Peter Sarsgaard touched upon The Batman and what type of film fans can expect from director Matt Reeves.

While he did not divulge details on his role, Peter Sarsgaard did note that The Batman distinguishes itself from the previous films with its young cast, adding that the new adaptation has an edge to it. To elaborate, Peter Sarsgaard likened The Batman to The Pixies, an alternative rock band known for songs such as “Gigantic” and “Dig for Fire”:

“Matt directing this Batman [is exciting]. The cast is so awesome. It seems different from other Batman movies to me, just with the cast. There’s something about it that has an edge, it’s young. To me, just my perception of it, it reminds me of when I was in college, and I went to go see The Pixies play, and looking around and feeling the vibe at a Pixies concert. That’s what it felt like to me, a song like ‘I Bleed.’ That it has the energy and that sort of thing, and isn’t so specifically targeted to a very young audience, or a very old audience, but has that power of chaos in it…”

Peter Sarsgaard expanded on his comparison by explaining that The Batman will be “very emotional”:

“The Pixies were my favorite group of all time. I went to like 20 concerts, and it was that feeling of all of us in this. And it’s very emotional. The Pixies were incredibly emotional band, and I think this Batman is very emotional in that way. I think it will be very powerful.”

Full plot details for The Batman are currently under wraps, though the film will center around a younger Bruce Wayne and feature a Rogues’ Gallery of villains that includes Catwoman, The Penguin, and The Riddler. The Matt Reeves film will follow Batman during his formative years as Gotham City’s protector and will make use of the Dark Knight’s detective skills to a greater extent than previous DC films. It is expected to be the first chapter in a new trilogy with Robert Pattinson as Batman.

Directed by Matt Reeves from a script he co-wrote with Mattson Tomlin, The Batman stars Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as the Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner James Gordon, Jayme Lawson as Bella, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Colin Farrell as the Penguin, and Peter Sarsgaard.

The Batman will be released in theaters on June 25, 2021.
