New ‘Planet Of The Apes’ Film May Begin Production This Summer

Ape not kill ape...

Disney Planet Of The Apes Wes Ball Maze Runner

20th Century Studios president Steve Asbell says that the new Planet of the Apes film may begin production as early as summer.

When Disney acquired the 20th Century Fox, now rebranded 20th Century Studios, it brought with it a huge number of intellectual properties with it. In addition to the various Marvel movie rights the studio owned, it also held the rights to the Alien and Planet of the Apes franchises. It was quickly made clear that the studio had every intention of continuing both of these franchises.

With the Alien series, Legion and Fargo creator Noah Hawley was brought on to develop a television series with a 2023 release date in mind. The next Planet of the Apes installment was put under Maze Runner director Wes Ball who has been working on the project since late 2019. Since then very little news has come from the franchise but that could change before too long.

While speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, 20th Century Studios president Steve Asbell provided an update on the film. Specifically, he revealed that they were expecting a draft on the script soon and that they hoped to go into production in late summer to early fall:

We are expecting a draft very shortly, and it’s Wes Ball attached to direct. We hope to go by the late summer, early fall.

Here is the synopsis for the last film in the franchise, War for the Planet of the Apes:

In War for the Planet of the Apes, the third chapter of the critically acclaimed blockbuster franchise, Caesar and his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless Colonel. After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind. As the journey finally brings them face to face, Caesar and the Colonel are pitted against each other in an epic battle that will determine the fate of both their species and the future of the planet.

Directed by Matt Reeves, the film stars Andy Serkis, Woody Harrelson, Judy Greer, Steve Zahn, Terry Notary, Karin Konoval, Max Lloyd-Jones, Devyn Dalton, Michael Adamthwaite, Ty Olson, and Alessandro Juliani.
