For fans of the original 1993 Mighty Morphin Power Rangers television show, this year’s big screen Power Rangers reboot hit on a lot of the things that fans loved about the series. However, there were a few things that didn’t make their way into the film version.

In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, director Dean Isrealite revealed that the Rangers’ Power Weapons from the original TV series were initially going to be featured in the film, but were cut for budget. Here’s what Isrealite said:

“Yeah, totally. That was, we went back and forth on that a lot. And… that again the honest answer is that I had to cut that stuff for budget.”

This makes sense, because each Ranger has their own unique weapon (an axe, a bow, daggers, a lance and a sword) which would all combine to create the ultra-powerful Power Blaster. Isrealite explains why this would end up being too pricey considering the CG required:

“It became very hard, because each weapon, even Jason, Jason has his weapon, but is a mixture of the physical prop and the CG enhancement. And sometimes it’s always fully CG. So that would have to hold true for all other unique designs. And each element you design is its own thing. So it becomes very difficult, you know multiplying the same pattern a million times is much easier than creating 5 unique different things. So we just had too many elements, we had too many assets, and I thought we could hold off for another movie.”

Earlier this week, Isrealite revealed that discussions are happening between Saban and Lionsgate about a sequel, so perhaps we could see the Power Weapons show up in the next film, if it ends up happening. If a sequel were greenlit, it would probably have a much lower budget considering the disappointing box office haul of the first one, so we still might not see the Power Weapons based on what Isrealite says here. However, the whole point of this franchise is to sell toys, and seeing as how high toy sales are most likely the only reason these discussions are happening, including the Power Weapons could be a great way to put a couple more items on the shelves of every fan’s local toy store.

Directed by Dean Israelite, the film stars Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott, RJ Cyler, Becky G, Ludi Lin, Bryan Cranston, Elizabeth Banks and Bill Hader.

Saban’s Power Rangers follows five ordinary teens who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove – and the world – is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discoverer they are the only ones who save the planet. But to do so, they will have to overcome their real-life issues and before it’s too late, band together as the Power Rangers.

Power Rangers is available today on Blu-Ray, 4K Ultra HD, DVD and Digital HD.
