Yesterday, Power Rangers director Dean Israelite confirmed that the upcoming feature film reboot of Haim Saban’s beloved franchise would include a post-credits scene. Though widely expected, the confirmation fueled fan speculation on who or what would be the focus of the post-credits sequence. Now, in an interview with CinemaBlend, Israelite discussed the purpose of the post-credits scene while confirming cameo appearances by cast members of the original Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers television show.
Israelite confirmed the cameo appearances by Power Rangers stars Amy Jo Johnson and Jason David Frank, who played the original Pink and Green Ranger, respectively. Israelite also revealed the tease featured in the film’s post-credits sequence.
“Yeah, you saw them. … Those were really the two that we thought were important to put in there and you know obviously we’re teasing something at the end that relates to [Tommy] so it sort of all felt organic.”
According to CinemaBlend, the scene sets up the introduction of Tommy Oliver by having a teacher call out his name in detention. Though he isn’t seen, fans of Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers will recognize the name as the original Green Ranger, first introduced as an underling of Rita Repulsa before being freed from her control and joining the Power Rangers as one of their most powerful team members.
The fact that the post-credits scene reveals Tommy will be in detention suggests a rebellious nature to his character, hinting that a potential Power Rangers sequel will follow the original show’s Green Ranger story arc to some degree.
Saban’s Power Rangers follows five ordinary teens who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove – and the world – is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discoverer they are the only ones who save the planet. But to do so, they will have to overcome their real-life issues and before it’s too late, band together as the Power Rangers.
Directed by Dean Israelite, the film stars Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott, RJ Cyler, Becky G, Ludi Lin, Bryan Cranston, Elizabeth Banks and Bill Hader.
Power Rangers will be released in theaters on March 24, 2017.
