Zachary Levi’s Shazam! sequel has found its first new cast member in West Side Story star Rachel Zegler.

TheWrap brings word that Rachel Zegler has joined the cast of Shazam! Fury of the Gods, the sequel to the 2019 DC Extended Universe superhero movie starring Zachary Levi. Zegler is a nineteen-year-old newcomer who plays the lead role of Maria in the upcoming remake of West Side Story, directed by Steven Spielberg.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods is expected to begin production later this year but the film won’t hit theaters until June 2023. New Line is also gearing up to begin production on Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam, a spin-off movie focusing on Shazam’s arch-nemesis. Zegler will play a key role in the sequel but details are currently unknown.

Recent rumors surrounding Shazam! Fury of the Gods claimed that the film would feature Henry Cavill’s Superman. A trade report later debunked the rumors, citing two sources with knowlege of the production and the actor’s schedule. Cavill’s Superman will next be seen in the Zack Snyder cut of Justice League, which hits HBO Max next month.

Here is the official synopsis for the first Shazam! movie:

We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quick.

Directed by David F Sandberg, Shazam! stars Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Mark Strong, Jack Dylan Grazer, Grace Fulton, Faithe Herman, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Cooper Andrews, Marta Milans, and Djimon Hounsou.

Shazam! is now available on Digital HD, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD. Stay tuned for all the latest news regarding Rachel Zegler and Zachary Levi’s Shazam! sequel, and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content!
