Darkseid actor Ray Porter has addressed an apparent plot hole concerning his character in Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
While Darkseid did not appear in the original 2017 theatrical version of Justice League, the villain took on a significant role in Zack Snyder’s cut of the movie, released last year on HBO Max. In the Snyder Cut, Darkseid was played by Ray Porter and served as the greater threat looming behind Ciarán Hinds’ Steppenwolf. Darkseid is drawn to Earth once Steppenwolf discovers it is the location of the Anti-Life Equation, which Darkseid almost obtained when he fought the gathered heroes of the Earth millennia ago. Many fans, however, have wondered how Darkseid could have forgotten the location of his most desired prize.
In the comics, the Anti-Life Equation gives its user the ability to erase free will, granting them control over sentient life. Zack Snyder’s Justice League seemed to stick close to this original concept in its interpretation of the Anti-Life Equation, though the idea would likely have been explored further had Snyder continued directing future DC movies. Talking to FandomWire about the film and the Anti-Life Equation, Ray Porter explained how Darkseid came to forget its location:
“Consider the fact that he’s turned a hundred thousand worlds to dust; it was so long ago that he found this equation and then it was taken from him in battle and he always wanted to ‘re-find’ it.
We are talking so many thousands of years, so many planets, universes, and possible Earths [hinting that he’s aware of a multiverse]. Uxas, the person who became Darkseid has also changed so much in that long timespan.
So, for someone whose knowledge spans so much, maybe the knowledge got lost in the vastness that it was on this Earth in particular. And then, Steppenwolf, of all people approaches him about this.”
It still seems likely that Darkseid would have made a note of the Anti-Life Equation’s location in the multiverse, but Porter raises a good point – after thousands of years of warfare across infinite earths, relocating one particular planet in the multiverse is probably not as simple as it first appears.
Here is the synopsis for Zack Snyder’s Justice League:
“In ZACK SNYDER’S JUSTICE LEAGUE, determined to ensure Superman’s (Henry Cavill) ultimate sacrifice was not in vain, Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) aligns forces with Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) with plans to recruit a team of metahumans to protect the world from an approaching threat of catastrophic proportions. The task proves more difficult than Bruce imagined, as each of the recruits must face the demons of their own pasts to transcend that which has held them back, allowing them to come together, finally forming an unprecedented league of heroes. Now united, Batman (Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Cyborg (Ray Fisher) and The Flash (Ezra Miller) may be too late to save the planet from Steppenwolf, DeSaad and Darkseid and their dreadful intentions.”
Both versions of Justice League are available to stream on HBO Max. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the future of the DC Universe and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
