One of the writers on Raya and the Last Dragon revealed how the film’s touching message relates to the real world.
When audiences meet Kelly Marie Tran‘s warrior princess in Raya and the Last Dragon, they’ll be transported across the rich, magical world of Kumandra. However, the nation became divided following a tragic accident in Raya’s childhood. And according to one of the writers on the upcoming Disney film, the story has a relatable message that the real world should take on-board. Not that we have a magical dragon voiced by Shang-Chi‘s Awkwafina, of course.
Ray and the Last Dragon screenwriter Qui Nguyen explained in a roundtable interview that although the animated adventure features plenty of literal magic, there’s a hidden element to it that our society could use a little of as we continue to push on through troubling times. Nguyen revealed that trust is “the real secret ingredient” in Raya and the Last Dragon, and pointed out that it’s a message he thinks it’s important for the world to see.
“Working for Disney, I think part of what we do is that we deal in magic. I think, right now, the-the world is very broken. This movie has a lot of magic in it, but I think the biggest piece of magic in it is trust. It is the real secret ingredient that will save our fictional world of Kumandra. And it’s a message I think is really important for the world to have and see.”
