John Williams On Rey’s Parentage Reveal In ‘Star Wars: Episode IX’

Rey Star Wars Episode IX John WilliamsStar Wars: The Last Jedi polarized many fans over some of the film’s shocking twists and turns. Right after Star Wars: The Force Awakens, there were two particular mysteries that fans speculated over for nearly two years: who is Supreme Leader Snoke? Who are Rey’s parents?

Well, for those who had sky high expectations on those two mysteries, writer/director Rian Johnson subverted all of those fan theories by having Kylo Ren kill Snoke to usurp power as the new Supreme Leader as well as dismissing those Rey parentage theories with the revelation that she’s offspring of two long-deceased junk traders.

Many fans were disappointed at the revelation that Rey was not related to anyone from the pre-established canon. Many guessed that she was also part of the Skywalker bloodline while some speculated that she’s a descendant of Obi-Wan Kenobi. But as it stands right now, Rey is a random young woman who is forging her own path despite coming from nowhere. Meanwhile, Kylo Ren was raised in legacy and royalty only to squander it all for his own selfish ambition in a situation where by all accounts, he should be the hero of this story.

Although the theory regarding Rey’s parentage is likely settled, legendary composer John Williams speculates that Star Wars: Episode IX may have a different answer:

“Rey’s parents might be identified to us in the next film.”

Williams expresses he thinks that Kylo Ren was lying about Rey’s parentage:

“I don’t believe it either. Rey, of course, is played by Daisy Ridley, who I so loved in The Force Awakens. And last year, when [Lucasfilm president] Kathy Kennedy rang me up and said, ‘Would you do the last music for The Last Jedi?’ I said to her, ‘Is Daisy in it?’ and she said yes, so I said yes.”

Perhaps J.J. Abrams will give a new answer for Rey’s parentage in Star Wars: Episode IX when it opens on December 20, 2019.

Here is the synopsis for Star Wars: The Last Jedi:

“In Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the Skywalker saga continues as the heroes of The Force Awakens join the galactic legends in an epic adventure that unlocks age-old mysteries of the Force and shocking revelations of the past.”

Written and directed by Rian Johnson, the film stars Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, Kelly Marie Tran, Laura Dern, Frank Oz and Benicio del Toro.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi will reportedly be released on Blu-ray and DVD on March 27, 2018.
