Ridley Scott On The Future Of The ‘Alien’ Franchise

Director Ridley Scott has opened up regarding the future of the Alien franchise and the direction the film series could take with the next installment.

The Alien franchise was originally being set up for multiple sequels following Alien: Covenant. The film returned the franchise back to the bloody horror roots of the original classic following 2012’s Prometheus, which garnered mixed reactions from fans. However, Covenant debuted to mixed reviews and in addition to underperforming at the box office, managing only $240 million worldwide. Despite this, Scott has remained hopeful to still bring his plans for a new trilogy to fruition with the franchise now under Disney’s control.

Speaking with the LA Times, Scott explained what he thinks the franchise would need to do in order to move forward as well as survive:

“I still think there’s a lot of mileage in Alien, but I think you’ll have to now re-evolve. What I always thought when I was making it, the first one, why would a creature like this be made and why was it traveling in what I always thought was a kind of war-craft, which was carrying a cargo of these eggs. What was the purpose of the vehicle and what was the purpose of the eggs? That’s the thing to question — who, why, and for what purpose is the next idea, I think.”

As for Scott’s plans for the next Alien film, the film titled Alien: Awakening was reportedly based on a script written by John Logan and would have featured the Engineers from Prometheus facing off against Michael Fassbender’s David, presumably on the planet LV-426.
