Robert De Niro seems to have spoiled the fate of his character in Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker

Academy Award-winning actor Robert De Niro stars in Joker as Murray Franklin, the host of a popular talk show who seems to have drawn the ire of Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck. In the final trailer for Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker, Robert De Niro’s Murray Franklin is shown ridiculing Arthur Fleck’s attempt at standup comedy while displaying footage of his performance on his show.

During an appearance on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon, Robert De Niro indicated Murray Franklin will face severe consequences for his actions at the hands of Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker. While discussing his experience working with Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro noted that while he likes his Joker co-star, he wasn’t a fan of what the Clown Prince of Crime does to his character:

“He was terrific. He was great yeah. I don’t like what he does to me but I like him a lot.”

Robert De Niro once again suggested Murray Franklin will suffer at the hands of Joaquin Phoenix when asked if playing a talk show host was difficult:

“No, it was fun. I wasn’t happy with the way it turned out but… (laughs).”

Here is the official synopsis for Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker:

Director Todd Phillips “Joker” centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone fictional story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck, who is indelibly portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, is of a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fracturedsociety. A clown-for-hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night…but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes one bad decision that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty character study.

Directed by Todd Phillips from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham.

Joker will be released in theaters on October 4, 2019. Stay tuned for the latest news on the Joaquin Phoenix movie!
