During an interview on Off Camera with Sam Jones, Robert Downey Jr. revealed Tony Stark’s final Iron Man suit in Avengers: Endgame was not designed for him to survive using it.
Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame concluded with a climactic battle between nearly every MCU hero and Thanos’ army, which resulted in a victory for Earth after Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man decided to sacrifice himself by using the Infinity Stones to eradicate the Mad Titan and his forces. While it appeared Iron Man made the decision to give his own life to save everyone on Earth after Doctor Strange reminded him there was only one possible path to victory, Robert Downey Jr.’s recent comments suggested Tony Stark may never have expected to survive the war against Thanos.
While reflecting on Tony Stark’s journey over the past decade, Robert Downey Jr. revealed the last Iron Man was not designed for the billionaire genius to survive using it:
“The last suit he has isn’t even designed for him to be able to survive using it. The first suit is all about, ‘will this get me, and my ego, and my precious physical frame out of this cave I’m in and into the desert, where maybe the cavalry can come get me and bring me back to my stupid life […] The last one is not desgined to be able to do its job and have make it past it. So, that’s the great Joseph Campbell mythology of, like, ultimately you go from refusing the call of being a serendipitous hero and by the end your willing to give the ultitmate sacrifice, your life, despite your family, and your groundedness, and your desire to no want to do that, so that community can thrive.”

The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos that wiped out half the universe and fractured the Avengers ranks compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand in Marvel Studios’ grand conclusion to twenty-two films, “Avengers: Endgame.”
