Robert Pattinson Describes Wearing The Batsuit For His ‘The Batman’ Audition

Robert Pattinson shared details on his final audition for Matt Reeves’ The Batman and the feelings he had while wearing the Caped Crusader’s outfit.

Earlier this year, Warner Bros. and Matt Reeves officially cast Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne for The Batman after screentests between the former Twilight star and Nicolas Hoult. As with previous actors vying for the role of Batman, Robert Pattinson had to wear a Batsuit from a previous film for his audition to give the filmmakers a sense of how he would embody the character in costume.

During an interview with Variety, Robert Pattinson described the audition as the “craziest thing” he has ever done in terms of “movie stuff.” After putting on the Batsuit, Robert Pattinson described the feeling as “transformative” and explained how difficult it was to fit into the costume:

“You do feel very powerful immediately. And it’s pretty astonishing, something that is incredibly difficult to get into, so the ritual of getting into it is pretty humiliating. You’ve got five people trying to shove you into something. Once you’ve got it on, it’s like, ‘Yeah, I feel strong, I feel tough, even though I had to have someone squeezing my butt cheeks into the legs.'”

Robert Pattinson also explained that while he had ideas of how to portray Batman, he had to adjust his movements after putting the outfit on:

“You’re trying to think of the way to balance, how to bring something new to it and not want to scare people off. And work in the confines of the costume.”

Five days later, Robert Pattinson received news of his casting during his first day on the set of Christopher Nolan’s new film Tenet. Taking advantage of the coincidental timing, Robert Pattinson asked Christopher Nolan, who helmed The Dark Knight trilogy, for advice on how to get more movements in the Batman costume.

Plot details for The Batman are currently under wraps, though the film will center around a younger Bruce Wayne and features a Rogues’ Gallery of villains that reportedly includes Catwoman and the Penguin. The Matt Reeves film will follow Batman during his formative years as Gotham City’s protector and will make use of the Dark Knight’s detective skills to a greater extent than previous DC films. It is expected to be the first chapter in a new trilogy with Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader.

Matt Reeves’ The Batman is one of the many projects currently being developed by Warner Bros. and DC. These projects include The Flash standalone film, Green Lantern Corps, Black Adam, Cyborg, Supergirl, New Gods, and Nightwing.

The Batman will be released in theaters on June 25, 2021.
