Robert Pattinson discussed which comics he’s been reading to prepare for his role in The Batman.

Warner Bros. and DC are moving forward with a fresh take on Batman from War for the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves and actor Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader. Of course, with the film currently in the pre-production phase, details on what Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson have envisioned for The Batman remain under lock and key.

However, Robert Pattinson shed some light on which comics he’s been reading to prepare for The Batman during an interview on Variety’s “The Big Ticket” Podcast. After admitting that he wasn’t aware of just how many Batman comics there were, Robert Pattinson revealed that he has been reading both the classic and contemporary titles for research, including the works of Tom King:

“I’m glad I’ve had quite a lot of time. I didn’t realize there were so many Batman comics. Hundreds and thousands. But I’ve been reading a lot of those, and not really just the kind of classics. I just like reading the sort of individual periodicals. It’s nice to kind of see the absolutely contemporary ones.

While Robert Pattinson acknowledged that he’s not sure what Matt Reeves’ The Batman will incorporate from the comics, he noted that it’s “nice to sort of get as much assimilation as you can.”

Full plot details for The Batman are currently under wraps, though the film will center around a younger Bruce Wayne and features a Rogues’ Gallery of villains that includes Catwoman, The Penguin, and The Riddler. The Matt Reeves film will follow Batman during his formative years as Gotham City’s protector and will make use of the Dark Knight’s detective skills to a greater extent than previous DC films. It is expected to be the first chapter in a new trilogy with Robert Pattinson as Batman.

Directed by Matt Reeves from a script he co-wrote with Mattson Tomlin, The Batman stars Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, and Paul Dano as the Riddler. Westworld star Jeffrey Wright was recently reported to be in talks for the role of Commissioner James Gordon.

The Batman will be released in theaters on June 25, 2021.
