Robert Pattinson discussed his audition process for the role of Bruce Wayne in Matt Reeves’ The Batman.

After Robert Pattinson completed his work on the Twilight film series, the young actor seemingly avoided Hollywood franchises and appeared in smaller, character-driven projects such as the recently-released film The Lighthouse. So, many were surprised to learn that Robert Pattinson was not only cast as the new Caped Crusader in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, but that he also made great efforts to be considered for the part.

During an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Robert Pattinson discussed how even his agents were shocked by his interest in Matt Reeves’ The Batman. After the first hearing of Matt Reeves’ intention to make a noir Batman film, Robert Pattinson recalled thinking, “I haven’t done a big thing for ages. This is the one I want.”

 

As the LA Times notes, Robert Pattinson “badgered” Matt Reeves before finally meeting with him and producer Dylan Clark on multiple occasions, which led to him securing his audition for The Batman. However, Robert Pattinson added this his three-week-long preparation for the audition was thrown away after finally put on The Batman costume.

Full plot details for The Batman are currently under wraps, though the film will center around a younger Bruce Wayne and features a Rogues’ Gallery of villains that includes Catwoman, The Penguin, and The Riddler. The Matt Reeves film will follow Batman during his formative years as Gotham City’s protector and will make use of the Dark Knight’s detective skills to a greater extent than previous DC films. It is expected to be the first chapter in a new trilogy with Robert Pattinson as Batman.

Directed by Matt Reeves from a script he co-wrote with Mattson Tomlin, The Batman stars Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as the Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner James Gordon, Jayme Lawson as Bella, and Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth. Recently, Colin Farrell was reportedly in talks to play the Penguin.

The Batman will be released in theaters on June 25, 2021.
