Robert Redford will reportedly come out of retirement to portray himself as the President of the United States in HBO’s Watchmen.
The final issue of Watchmen hinted at acclaimed actor Robert Redford running for President of the United States in the fictional world created by Alan Moore. Now, HBO’s Watchmen will reportedly expand upon that concept by featuring Robert Redford as the longest-serving President of the United States, with the award-winning actor coming out of retirement to portray the fictional version of himself in the upcoming series.
At the Television Critics Association panel, Watchmen showrunner Damon Lindelof explained President Richard Nixon, who abolished terms limits in the original series, will have died in office with Gerald Ford subsequently ascending to the presidency. However, Gerald Ford lost the 1992 presidential election to Robert Redford, who will have served through 2019 once the HBO series begins.
Robert Redford initially announced his retirement from acting in August 2018, with his final lead role being the main character in The Old Man & the Gun. Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame featured a brief appearance by Robert Redford, reprising his role as Alexander Pierce, though the superhero epic was filmed before he completed work on the aforementioned drama.
