Rogue One: A Star Wars Story director Gareth Edwards has revealed Jyn Erso’s mother, Lyra Erso, was originally going to be a Jedi.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Edwards explained that in an early draft of the screenplay the original prologue was going to take place during the fall of the Republic as the Empire exterminated the Jedi after the Emperor executed order 66:
“The prologue, at one point a long time ago, was going to be the Empire coming to kill the Jedi. And Jyn’s mom was going to be a Jedi.”
Edwards went further to say that the concept for the prologue was to have Krennic kill Jyn’s mother and that Krennic would have carried out order 66 on Jyn’s mother but the set up didn’t necessarily pay off because Jyn was never to become a Jedi:
“Our instinct told us that we wanted a scene where Jyn is orphaned because of what Krennic does, which sets her on her path of being a child of war.The problem was that the second you make her mom a Jedi you spend the entire movie questioning whether Jyn is a Jedi or not. Eventually, we came up with the idea that her father should have designed the Death Star. That became a stronger way into the stealing of the Death Star plans. We let go of the mother being a Jedi, and she became just a rebellious mom.”
While Lyra herself not a Jedi in the final draft of the screenplay, the film does display that she has a firm belief in the Force. The Rogue One Visual Guide also confirms that Lyra studied the history and philosophies of the Jedi in defiance of the Empire. She also wears the red sash of the enlightened worn by the sects native to Jedha such as Chirrut Îmwe.
