‘Ahsoka’: Rosario Dawson’s ‘Star Wars’ Series May Begin Shooting This Year

Ahsoka will make her triumphant return!

Rosario Dawson Ahsoka Tano The Mandalorian 2 Star Wars

Production on the new Star Wars series Ahsoka with Rosario Dawson may start by the end of 2021.

During Disney Investor Day 2020, Lucasfilm officially announced that one of the spin-off Star Wars series expanding the world established in The Mandalorian will be Ahsoka. Rosario Dawson plays Anakin Skywalker’s former Padawan Ahsoka Tano years after she was last seen in the animated series Star Wars Rebels.

Production on numerous Star Wars shows including Andor and Obi-Wan Kenobi occurred throughout 2021, which has been a relatively quiet year for the franchise compared to previous years since Disney’s purchase of Lucasfilm. With The Book of Boba Fett set to premiere by the end of this year and the third season of The Mandalorian also readying production for Season 3, some will be surprised to hear that Rosario Dawson may shoot Ahsoka sooner than expected.

During the FatMan Beyond podcast, Marc Bernardin revealed that he almost cast Rosario Dawson in a short film he is looking to shoot in December. Unfortunately, scheduling conflicts will get in the way, because it sounds like the Ahsoka actress will return to film in the Star Wars universe by that time:

“[Kevin Smith] helped me connect with somebody who was going to be in the cast but couldn’t make it happen,” Bernardin said. “It was Rosario Dawson… she was the first choice, and I wanted her very, very badly, and she read the script and loved it, but she was like ‘Listen, I’m going to be in Manhattan Beach making a f—ing Star Wars show, and, uh, I can’t be in your short.’ Which I was like ‘Okay! That checks out!”

Although Marc Bernardin did not confirm that Rosario Dawson will indeed start shooting on Ahsoka, signs point to this probably being the case, although it is possible that she could also appear in The Mandalorian Season 3, given the intersecting timelines.

Ahsoka will take place within the same timeline as The Mandalorian, which is set between Star Wars: Return of the Jedi and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The Mandalorian. Here is the synopsis for The Mandalorian:

“After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, another warrior emerges in the Star Wars universe. The Mandalorian is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. We follow the travels of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic….”

The Mandalorian stars Pedro Pascal, Giancarlo Esposito, Temuera Morrison, Katee Sackhoff, Ming-Na Wen, Bill Burr, Timothy Olyphant, and Carl Weathers, with Rosario Dawson joining the series as Ahsoka Tano ahead of her spin-off series. The series was created by Jon Favreau and executive produced by Dave Filoni, with season two episodes also directed by Rick Famuyiwa, Bryce Dallas Howard, Peyton Reed, Carl Weathers, and Robert Rodriguez.

The first two seasons of The Mandalorian are available on Disney Plus.
