In the latest trailer for the second season of Marvel’s Hulu show Runaways, the series dropped a fairly big connection to Doctor Strange.
The trailer in question shows us a bit of what became of the characters from the first season. They are all still on the run from their super villain parents who are determined to get them back. In addition it also hints at a conflict between the kinds and their parents and a possible greater adversary for them all to unite against. Most interestingly, however, the trailer seemed to drop a major connection to Doctor Strange.
Towards the end of the trailer, Nico Minoru, (Lyrica Okano), seemed to be loosing control of her power and afraid of what she might do. During the final shot of the trailer we see her with cracked skin under her eyes revealing a dark, purple layer beneath. She then yells towards the camera as what appears to be a layer of dark magic shoots from her staff.

This particular look is identical to the appearance that Doctor Strange antagonist, Kaecilius, (Mads Mikkelsen), took on after accessing power from the dark dimension and swearing loyalty to its master, Dormammu. During the film, he and his followers attempted to bring Dormammu to Earth with the promise for greater power and eternal life. They were ultimately thwarted by Doctor Strange, (Benedict Cumberbatch) who more or less annoyed Dormammu to stay away from the Earth. If, however, Nico is accessing power from the Dark Dimension, it will not bode well for the Runaways.
What do you make of this particular shot? Are you hoping for the show to have more connections to the main films or should the series try and remained self contained? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
Here is a synopsis for the latest season:
The Runaways have left their homes (and evil parents) behind and now have to learn to live on their own. As they scavenge for food, search for shelter, and take care of one another, our kids begin to realize that, for better or worse, they’re stuck with each other. And it’s up to them to take down PRIDE once and for all. But someone sent a mysterious message to Jonah… Is there a mole in the Runaways? Meanwhile PRIDE is focused on finding their children, and Jonah has his own dangerous plan in mind.
Marvel’s Runaways is executive produced by series showrunners/writers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage (The O.C. and Gossip Girl) along with Marvel’s Head of Television, Jeph Loeb (Marvel’s Jessica Jones, Marvel’s The Defenders). Fake Empire’s Lis Rowinski will produce as well. Marvel’s Runaways is a co-production with ABC Signature Studios.
The second season premieres on December 21, 2018, on Hulu.
