After delivering four critically-acclaimed Marvel Studios movies that grossed a collective $6.7 billion at the global box office, the Russo Bros reveal whatever it’s going to take to get them to come out of their self-imposed semi-retirement from Marvel.
The Russo Bros have earned a long break after a roughly six-year commitment to Marvel Studios, directing some of the biggest and most important movies to the Marvel Cinematic Universe shared setting. They’re not ruling out a return, either, but they suggest that it’s gonna be a while before they direct another big Marvel project.
Talking to SyFy Wire, they revealed that a big element that would pull them back in are characters that were previously licensed to Fox. While the Russo Bros have mentioned an affinity for Wolverine in particular, Joe explains that they’re also really interested in the Fantastic Four side of the Marvel Universe.
“I grew on up [John] Byrne’s X-Men run. Ben Grimm was a favorite character growing up, The Thing. And Fantastic Four is now in the Marvel fold. There’s a lot! Silver Surfer is an amazing character. Going really big in cosmic would be a lot of fun. So there’s a lot of things that could attract us.”
As it stands, a Fantastic Four project is quite a while away, as are projects with the other Fox-owned characters. That shouldn’t rule out cameos along the way, but by the time that Marvel actually gets to the characters in standalone efforts, it may just be ripe time for the Russo Bros to make a triumphant return to the film company that turned them into Hollywood superstars.
Here’s the official synopsis for the latest movie from the Russo Bros:
