The Russo Brothers, known for their work on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, have expressed their interest in directing a Batman movie for DC Studios. In a recent interview, Anthony and Joe Russo shared their excitement at the prospect of working with DC Studios and collaborating with James Gunn and Peter Safran, the producers overseeing the DC Universe.
In an interview with ComicBook.com, Anthony and Joe Russo revealed their love for DC Comics characters and their desire to work with James Gunn. “We don’t get asked a lot about DC characters,” Anthony said. “Obviously James over there running it, it would be a no-brainer,” Joe added. “We love him to death. We love the direction he’s going to take that world in. You know he’s gonna be inventive with it.”
The Russo Brothers’ interest in DC Comics characters goes back to their childhoods. “Favorite DC characters? I mean, man. There are so many good ones. I always answer based on the comics I collected as a kid, and the two comics I collected the most were Spider-Man — actually, the three — were Spider-Man, X-Men, and Batman,” Joe said.
While Batman is an obvious choice for the Russo Brothers, they acknowledged that the character has been well explored in the past. “Here’s how you know we haven’t actually gotten literal about it and specific about it is because, yeah, Batman would be my favorite character for my entire childhood. But obviously, it’s been well explored,” Anthony said.
Fans of both Marvel and DC have been buzzing with excitement at the prospect of the Russo Brothers bringing their talents to the DC Universe. The two have a proven track record of success with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, having directed blockbusters such as Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
Could the Russo Brothers direct The Brave and the Bold?
DC Studios will be bringing Batman and Robin back to the big screen in a new movie titled The Brave and The Bold. The project is still in its early stages and does not yet have a director attached. However, with the Russo Brothers expressing interest in directing a Batman movie for the DC Universe, fans are speculating that they could potentially helm the DC Universe project.
James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room and a unified storyline across film, television, animation and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.
The Flash, Blue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom are currently in various stages of post-production at Warner Bros. Discovery, with all four DC Universe movies slated to hit theaters in 2023. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
