Samuel L. Jackson has said he would rather enjoy taking on roles like Marvel’s Nick Fury or Star Wars‘ Mace Windu than chase Oscars.
To call Samuel L. Jackson’s acting career impressive would be an understatement. The actor has appeared in the Star Wars films, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Jurassic Park and throughout Quentin Tarantino’s canon of work, as well as in countless other roles. However, Jackson’s only Oscar was an honorary Lifetime Achievement Award he won earlier this year. But the cinematic legend has revealed he is not particularly concerned with Oscar victories.
Having Fun With A Lightsaber
In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, Samuel L. Jackson discussed his career and his feelings towards the Oscars. He explained that he had moved past any desire to win an Oscar and any dissatisfaction with missing out, saying he measures his success by his satisfaction with his roles.
Asked about winning the Lifetime Achievement Award, Jackson divulged his thoughts on chasing Oscar-baiting roles:
“As jaded as I wanted to be about it, you know thinking, ‘Well, I should have won an Oscar for this or should have won for that and it didn’t happen,’ once I got over it many years ago, it wasn’t a big deal for me. I always have fun going to the Oscars. I always look forward to getting a gift basket for being a presenter. [Laughs] I give stuff to my relatives; my daughter and my wife would take stuff out. It’s cool.
“But otherwise, I was past it. I was never going to let the Oscars be a measure of my success or failure as an actor. My yardstick of success is my happiness: Am I satisfied with what I’m doing? I’m not doing statue-chasing movies. You know [whispers]: ‘If you do this movie, you’ll win an Oscar.’ No, thanks. I’d rather be Nick Fury. Or having fun being Mace Windu with a lightsaber in my hand.”
Samuel L. Jackson will soon be returning to the role of Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, though not on the big screen. This time around, Jackson will be leading Marvel’s Secret Invasion series on Disney Plus, which will see Nick Fury return alongside the shapeshifting Skrulls.
Most recently, Samuel L. Jackson voiced Nick Fury in animation in Marvel Studios’ What If…?. Here’s the official synopsis:
“Exploring pivotal moments from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and turning them on their head, leading the audience into uncharted territory.”
The animated series features the voices of Josh Brolin, Natalie Portman, Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, Jeremy Renner, Paul Rudd, Mark Ruffalo, Chadwick Boseman, Jeffrey Wright, Hayley Atwell, and other major stars from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
