While Marvel Studios is currently developing the film Captain Marvel, the first Marvel Cinematic Universe entry to feature a female lead, fans continue to wonder why the studio has yet to slate a solo entry for their longtime heroine, Black Widow. In an interview with Total Film magazine, actress Scarlett Johansson, who has portrayed the character since her debut in 2010’s Iron Man 2, discussed the possibility of a Black Widow film and explained the reason behind the delay.

Johansson explained that the busy schedules for both herself and Marvel Studios present a roadblock for Black Widow’s solo film.

“I’ve talked to Kevin Feige about it. We’re creatively really compatible.  I think we both agree that the character is right for a standalone, it’s just a case of timing at this point for both Marvel and myself.”

While some fans may not be satisfied with the explanation, especially considering Marvel Studios has adjusted their schedule before, Johansson explained that she wants to be able to devote herself to the project wholeheartedly.

“Marvel has a really huge roster. They’re looking four years ahead. I also have a lot of things that I want to do. If I did it, I would dedicate myself completely to making it amazing. It would have to be the best version that movie could possibly be. Otherwise, I would never do it.”

Johansson did express some reservations about doing a Black Widow film.

“[I] don’t know if I have the capacity for it. I think the fans were adamant about it, it could be done. It should be done, probably.”

Despite those concerns, Johansson did share her own ideas for the potential project.

“It’d have to be done the right way, though. It’d really have to be its own standalone and its own style and its own story. But there’s a lot of great stuff that you could do with it. It could just be awesome.”

It appears all participants are willing to move forward with a Black Widow solo film, but that the project is contingent on the other plans of both parties. While it may be frustrating that Marvel Studios has yet to make room for a Black Widow film, perhaps fans can understand Johansson’s current desire to tackle other projects when she’s not playing Natasha Romanoff in other Marvel Cinematic Universe films?
