Scarlett Johansson said that she believes Black Widow will not be brought back to life after Avengers: Endgame.

Before the release of Avengers: Endgame, most fans suspected Iron Man or Captain America would be killed at some point during the Marvel Studios epic. However, few placed Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow high on the list of potential casualties in Avengers: Endgame and therefore many were surprised when the heroine sacrificed herself on Vormir so the team could acquire the Soul Stone.

During an interview on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Scarlett Johansson reflected on Black Widow’s death while discussing the upcoming standalone film for the character. As Scarlett Johansson explained, the Black Widow solo movie brought her closure that Avengers: Endgame couldn’t due to the character’s quick demise:

“Honestly, it brought a closure to me that I needed, cause I was kind of wiped out after that last one emotionally and literally.”

Of course, fans know death in the world of comic book heroes is often temporary and some wonder if Scarlett Johansson’s Avengers: Endgame death could be reversed somehow. However, Scarlett Johansson stated that she believes Black Widow’s Endgame death will not be undone in any way:

“There’s very few certain things but definitely, death is pretty certain. But, people definitely don’t believe it and have tried to convince me that my character did not actually die. That maybe, my character existed in an alternate universe. But no, I think death is a pretty final thing.”

Full plot details on Marvel Studios’ Black Widow are currently under wraps, though it has been revealed that the film is set after the events of Captain America: Civil War and will see Scarlett Johansson’s Nathasha Romanoff take on the villainous Taskmaster. The film will also mark the Marvel Cinematic Universe debut of Yelena Belova, the second modern-era character to use the Black Widow title in the comics.

Scarlett Johansson was last seen as Black Widow in Avengers: Endgame. Here’s the official synopsis for the movie:

The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos that wiped out half the universe and fractured the Avengers ranks compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand in Marvel Studios’ grand conclusion to twenty-two films, “Avengers: Endgame.”

Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, Avengers: Endgame stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo,  Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Paul Rudd, Brie Larson, Karen Gillan, Danai Gurira, Benedict Wong, Jon Favreau, Bradley Cooper, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Josh Brolin.

Avengers: Endgame is now available on Digital HD, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD while Black Widow will be released in theaters on May 1, 2020.
