Avengers: Endgame co-director Joe Russo has commented on a potential return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to helm Secret Wars.
One of the most highly-anticipated projects that fans want to see come out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is Secret Wars. The iconic comic storyline pits Marvel heroes and villains in a battle royale-esque fight between good and evil. The ensemble storyline has gone down as one of the best runs Marvel has ever produced, so it’s fitting that fans want to see the chaotic crossover on the big screen.
With the multiverse expanding and more villains being brought into the fold with each passing entry, fans are operating from the mindset that a Secret Wars film is a matter of when not if. The perfect contenders for the cosmic Marvel crossover would be none other than the Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo. The duo retreated from Marvel Studios after the iconic crossover but have left the door open for future projects. The brothers have previously commented on a Secret Wars project but nothing official has been announced.
During the Spider-Man: No Way Home premiere, Comicbook.com was able to chat with Avengers: Endgame co-director Joe Russo about a potential Secret Wars project. Though Russo did maintain that anything is possible, his hesitant face tells a different story as he distances himself from the question.
“One of these days. We’ll have to see how all this shakes out. I don’t know what they’re going to do with all these characters.
The director was then asked if he and his brother plan on returning to Marvel Studios for a future project, which Russo enthusiastically responded to.
“What can I say? Look, we love those guys. You know I can’t say one way or the other, but I’d work with them in a heartbeat. It’s the best working experience of our careers. They’re like family to us and we love them, the material, and the fans.”
Here is the synopsis for Avengers Endgame:
The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos that wiped out half the universe and fractured the Avengers ranks compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand in Marvel Studios’ grand conclusion to twenty-two films, “Avengers: Endgame.”
